This year, the Turks & Caicos National Trust leads the celebration of the month-long celebration of Biodiversity Day with its campaign called “Selfie for Biodiversity”. The National Trust is calling on the general public to submit “selfies” that show commitment and efforts to protect biodiversity.

Photos should highlight TCI’s wild flora and fauna, various ecosystems, even efforts, campaigns and programs covering diverse topics under biodiversity such as coastal clean-ups, tree-planting activities, fisheries and tourism, among others. This is in line with this year’s theme: Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods.

The National Trust challenges groups and individuals to heighten their interest on biodiversity issues and support efforts aimed at the protection of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is not only a variety of life, but also a way of life. That is why there is a need to take charge of protecting biodiversity. Sometimes, we only bask in the beauty of nature, but we rarely take efforts to protect the wildlife endemic to the Turks & Caicos and their natural habitats.

Take a selfie. Capture biodiversity at its best and inspire people to act.

You can post selfies at our Facebook page, search for Turks & Caicos National Trust. The best photos will be featured at the exhibit planned for World Environment Day in June.

In support to this year’s celebration of World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, the Turks & Caicos National Trust and the Department of Environment & Maritime Affairs (DEMA) conducted a mangrove planting exercise at Wheeland Pond in Blue Hills. Participants were students from Clement Howell High School.

Wetlands for our Future: Sustainable Livelihoods is the theme for World Wetlands Day in 2016. This theme is selected to demonstrate the vital role of wetlands for the future of humanity and specifically their relevance towards achieving the new Sustainable Development Goals.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Since 1997, the Ramsar Secretariat provides outreach materials to help raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.

The TCNT Multicultural Youth Leadership Camp 2015 held at the Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre was a great success.

This training prepared young people to be effective leaders in both mainstream society and with their respective ethnic groups. As well as, engage youth in an age-appropriate analysis of leadership, culture, mainstream models and bridge-building tools, we position them not only as leaders in their own communities, but as leaders in the process of changing how we think about leadership.

We will be hosting another Multicultural Youth Leadership Camp at the Department of Youth Affairs, August 10th-15th, 2015. For more information please contact us at 649-941-5710.
